Wisdom Teeth Extractions

Wisdom teeth are the third molar teeth found in the upper and lower jaws. In some cases, there is sufficient room for these to come through the gum (erupt) normally. In many people however, there is insufficient room for this and they can be trapped behind the second molar teeth (impacted).

When the wisdom teeth come through part way (partially erupted) and get stuck, they can cause recurring infections and severe pain. In these cases, removal of the wisdom teeth may be performed either under a local or general anesthetic, using dissolvable stitches to seal the area where the tooth once was. The choice of anaesthetic depends on the severity of the impaction, number of teeth involved and the patient’s preference. Our doctors will chat with you about which is the best option.

Dental Implants
Dental Implants are small titanium screws designed to replace the root of a tooth. As an artificial root, they form the foundation for the attachment of a new tooth or bridge. Implants restore your physical appearance and chewing functions. Dental implants may also be used to improve the retention of your full upper and/or full lower denture.
Orthognathic Surgery
Orthognathic surgery or corrective jaw surgery refers to the complex and complicated surgery of the upper and/or lower jaw to correct bony asymmetry or jaw deficiencies.

Townsville Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery uses computerized 3D planning for jaw surgery. This provides the patient with a beautiful visual guide to the planned outcomes. It also allows for more predictable surgical results.

Surgically Assisted Maxillary Expansion (SAME)
SAME is an operation performed to expand and widen a narrow maxilla (upper jaw) in conjunction with orthodontic treatment. The benefits of the SAME are correction of the dental cross bites, a broader smile and to straighten crooked teeth without the need for tooth extraction in some cases.

Townsville Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery uses computerized 3D planning for jaw surgery. This provides the patient with a beautiful visual guide to the planned outcomes. It also allows for more predictable surgical results.

Genioplasty (Chin Surgery)
When the profile of your chin needs correction because the bones of your face and jaws are out of balance with each other, surgery can change the position of the chin.

This procedure teamed together with cosmetic injections has great aesthetic results.

Oral Pathology
Treatment of conditions involving the mouth and jaws (eg. cysts and tumours).

Oral Pathology may include lesions of the oral mucosa, palate, gums, salivary glands, and tongue as well as lesions that arise around the teeth and within the bones of the face.

Your work-up may include thorough clinical examinations, imaging and biopsies.

Dentoalveolar Surgery
Dentoalveolar surgery refers to operations on the teeth and the bones that support them. This can include anything from simple removal of diseased teeth to removing pathology from within the bones of the jaws.

The surgery may be performed under local anaesthetic or general anaesthetic depending on the particular case.

Trauma Surgery
Maxillofacial injuries are commonly referred to as facial trauma and encompass any injury to the mouth, face and jaw. The majority of Maxillofacial injuries are caused through sporting injuries, motor vehicle accidents, work-based injuries, or assaults.

We have spent many years involved in treating these injuries, both publicly and privately, with the aim of returning the patient to full form and function.

Bone Grafting
A bone graft is a surgical procedure used to fix problems with bones or joints. Bone grafting, or transplanting of bone tissue, is beneficial in fixing bones that are damaged from any of the following situations:

  • Trauma
  • Infections
  • Developmental deformity
  • Loss of bone after dental extractions
  • Multiple or complex fractures or those that don’t heal well after initial treatment
  • Lesions including cysts, abscesses, or tumors

TMJ Dysfunction
Your temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is located just in front of your ear and allows the lower jaw to move when eating or speaking. In between the bones of the joint is a small piece of cartilage which acts as a buffer between the bones. There can be multiple causes, all of which can cause headaches and/or pain either within the joint or in the muscles around the jaws.

Face by Townsville Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (TSVOMS) specialises in therapeutic injectables. The TMJ clinic can provide a full range of therapy options for TMJ patients including arthrocentesis, medications, muscle relaxants, referrals for bite splints and in some cases surgery. The team works closely with physiotherapists to achieve the best outcomes for patients.

Muscle Relaxant Injections
Face by Townsville Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (TSVOMS) specialises in therapeutic injectables. If you are experiencing persistent pain and/or tenderness in your jaw, speak to your GP, Dentist or Physiotherapist about a referral to Townsville Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery to discuss possible causes and treatment options.

Dr Benjamin Rahmel, along with our in-house fully trained Registered Nurse (RN), Ann Burbidge, form Face – TMJ Cinic by TSVOMS. Please click here for more information or go to The Face Clinic Facebook page.

Impacted Tooth Removal
An impacted tooth is a tooth that is embedded in the bone and is blocked from coming into the mouth due to its incorrect position or lack of space available. An impacted tooth can be partially exposed through the gum or completely submerged and only visible on an X-Ray.

An impacted tooth can cause decay, pressure to neighbouring teeth, infection, cyst formations, and even orthodontic problems. It is best that you visit an Oral & Maxillofacial surgeon to have these removed and sutured up properly using dissolvable stitches.

Autogenous Tooth Transplantation
Tooth Transplantation is a procedure that involves replacing a damaged or compromised tooth with an unerupted tooth. The Maxillofacial surgeon removes the diseased/damaged tooth and prepares the socket for the transplant procedure using a 3D printed tooth. A suitable donor tooth is then extracted carefully with minimal damage to the surrounding tissue. The donor tooth is placed in the prepared recipient socket and kept in place using a suture splint.

This can be an alternative to dental implants or more complicated orthodontic treatment, in certain cases.

Tongue Tie Release or Ankyloglossia
Tongue-tie or Ankyloglossia is necessary when patients have a tight frenulum under their tongue. This may prevent the tongue from moving freely. When it affects children, tongue-tie may cause problems as a child learns to talk or if an infant is trying to feed.

A frenectomy procedure can be done in as little as 10-15 minutes & is performed either in hospital under a General Anaesthetic or in our treatment rooms under Local.
